Tyler Perry’s BOO 2 Scares Up Domestic Box Office

Easily carving up the competition, the Tyler Perry sequel Boo 2! A Madea Halloween made over $20 million at the North American box office this past weekend, enough for first place overall. The $21.65 million total left in the dust all the other wide releases this frame, including Gerald Butler’s critically-panned Geostorm, which grossed a tiny $13.3 million in the United States and Canada to go with its $49.6 million cume from two weekends of release abroad. Warner’s $120 million project is thus just north of $60 million with several other international territories to go, but this cannot possibly...

THE DARK TOWER Tops Lackluster Summer Weekend

With the top 12 movies making barely above $100 million combined, the first weekend of August was the slowest at the multiplex since April. Indeed, tickets sales are about 10% down from the same time in 2016. It was under those circumstances that the critically panned adaptation of Stephen King’s novel The Dark Tower “triumphed” at the box office, with a tally just shy of $20 million, an inauspicious beginning for what is supposed to be the start of a franchise whose even first film cost over $65 million to make. In second place was the Christopher Nolan World War...

DUNKIRK Stays Strong, Topping THE EMOJI MOVIE and ATOMIC BLONDE At Box Office

Buoyed by strong numbers in IMAX locations, Christopher Nolan’s World War II drama Dunkirk remained atop the domestic box office, holding off challenges by newcomers The Emoji Movie and Atomic Blonde. The film brought in an estimated $28.1 million, representing only a 44% drop from opening weekend and good to help it cross the $100 million mark in just ten days of release. The movie’s worldwide total has now reached $236 million, after adding showings in several new territories including Germany, the U.K., and Mexico, all of which netted it strong totals. Putting up a good fight but ultimately falling short was Sony’s The...
