Adam Driver Says Kylo Ren Will Be Different In STAR WARS: EPISODE VIII
Kylo Ren is a tortured soul and Adam Driver gets that.
While promoting his new Martin Scorsese movie Silence on Larry King Now he had this to say when asked what aspect of Kylo Ren is he most excited to explore in Star Wars: Episode VIII:
“I think maybe this is such a general answer but you know, humanity. Even though it’s very much a blockbuster movie, and I’m aware of that, there was no taking that for granted and that we were forced to be general. There was a lot of plot points that we knew were operating in the first one, that we get to explain more in the second one, that kind of make both of them make sense. But they do kind of feel socially active to me. And George Lucas originally — a lot of ‘Star Wars’ was in response to Vietnam and a lot of what I remember talking about with J.J. (Abrams) and Rian [Johnson] was this idea of terrorism, and two sides being morally justified to behave however they wanted to to get whatever they thought was absolutely correct.”
Recently Driver was asked about the Rian Johnson and the Episode VIII script, which he said:
“He’s a brilliant filmmaker. And he wrote the script also, and he understands the importance of ambiguity and nuance. He wrote something that I think is remarkable.”
Driver was then asked to compare the next Star Wars to the other saga films:
“It’s great. It’s similar to how The Empire Strikes Back has a different tone. For that people always go “oooh, it’s dark” but I don’t know that it necessarily is. It’s just different in tone in a way that I think is great and necessary but also very clear. He trusts [that] his audience is ready for nuance and ambiguity. He’s not dumbing anything down for someone and that’s really fun to play.”
Everyone is curious to see what happens in Episode VIII and Kylo Ren will be a big part of it.
Star Wars: Episode VIII hits theaters December 15, 2017.
