AQUAMAN Release Date Pushed Back

AQUAMAN Release Date Pushed Back

The Aquaman release date is doing the backstroke because now the film is swimming further and further away.

Warner Bros has just pushed back the release date for its DC tentpole Aquaman starring Jason Momoa from October 2018 to December 21, 2018. That prime location was vacated last week when James Cameron said his Avatar 2 would not be ready in time for that date, which had been penciled in for the second in four planned sequels.

The studio has a lot riding on Aquaman. Warner Bros. has invested heavily in crafting a cinematic universe of DC Comics characters to rival the one established by Marvel, with mixed success. Things like this affect the Aquaman release date, hence why it got movied. Both Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad were commercial hits, but they were bashed by critics, signalling that quality control will be important going forward.

Aquaman had a cameo in Batman v Superman and has a larger role in next fall’s Justice League, a film about a super-team of spandex-rocking heroes that features the Dark Knight, Wonder Woman, and the Man of Steel.

Aquaman will center on Arthur Curry/Aquaman as a reluctant ruler of the underwater kingdom of Atlantis who is caught between land dwellers that are always polluting the globe and his own people who are ready to invade the surface.

With the Aquaman movie getting ready to film, it’s rapidly adding to its cast. Right now that includes Jason Momoa as Arthur, Amber Heard as Mera, Queen of Atlantis and Willem Dafoe as longtime ally Vulko (not pictured). Patrick Wilson, who has worked with Aquaman director James Wan on both Conjuring films, will play Orm, the half-brother of Aquaman.

Nicole Kidman will make her return to the DC Universe (remember her as Dr. Chase Meridian in Batman Forever?) as Aquaman’s mother, Atlanna. While the deal isn’t finalized yet, don’t be surprised if she turns out to have a significant role in this.
