Frank Grillo Says He’s Done With Crossbones; Not Too Sure On PURGE 4

Frank Grillo Says He’s Done With Crossbones; Not Too Sure On PURGE 4

Frank Grillo is a man’s man. He also really likes to be in movies with semicolons in their titles.

The grizzled veteran tv actor who spent most of his early career doing the typical cop and tv drama stuff finally got his biggest break when the Russo brothers cast him as Brock Rumlow in Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

This eventually led to that character becoming CROSSBONES in Captain America: Civil War, the HYDRA mercenary tasked with a revenge plot against Captain America, the person that disfigured him.

SPOILER ALERT, he gets disfigured even more after Crossbones detonates himself in the beginning of the movie.

In between those two Marvel films, Grillo was given the opportunity to jump on as one of the leads in the new Purge sequel,Purge: Anarchy. After that movie grossed over $100 million he was asked to return for the sequel to the sequel,Purge: Election Year. Then that movie made over $100 million dollars.

Purge Election

Long story short, Universal Pictures liked him enough that they were willing to hand him the keys to the Purge franchise.

But Grillo might have other plans for his future. While promoting season 3 of his DirecTV series Kingdom, it doesn’t seem like Frank wants to continue his Purge role:

“It is what it is, but it’s great. It’s fun. After Anarchy, Universal called me and said, ‘You’ve got a franchise. We’re gonna continue with this, if you wanna do this.’ I was like, ‘Yeah, this is great!’ And so, when Election Year was even more successful, they were like, ‘Let’s keep doing this!’ I was like, ‘Maybe. I think I might be done, but you should keep doing it!’ But, I love it! [James] DeMonaco, who wrote and directed all of them, reminds me a lot of (Kingdom creator/showrunner) Byron [Balasco], in the sense that he so understands the world he’s created that you just follow him. For an actor, that’s fun.”

So when pressed more about whether or not he’d be down to do another Purge film, he pretty much confirmed that the character of Crossbones won’t be seen again in the near future of the MCU:

“If DeMonaco was still involved and they came up with a great idea, then I think I would do [another Purge movie]. Otherwise, I think I’m done. Same thing with Captain America. There’s nowhere for it to go, unless you’re Captain America or Iron Man. They were talking about it, but I was like, ‘You know what? I’d just rather not do it.’ I’m so appreciative and grateful to have been a part of something that big. I’m appreciative of The Purge. It’s become a part of the lexicon and the zeitgeist knows what it is, so that’s been fun. But, it’s time to move on. Don’t stay at the party too long, or you get knocked through the ropes.”

It’s not that shocking when it comes to Crossbones, but the Purge news is definitely interesting. Grillo could ride that franchise for a few more films and solidify his name with another major Hollywood property.

Regardless of the outcome we can expect Frank Grillo to be back on the big screen sooner than later.
