Gears Of War Movie Finds A Writer

Gears Of War Movie Finds A Writer

Microsoft and Universal’s Gears of War video game franchise is headed to the big screen and they’ve finally found someone to write the script.

Deadline is reporting that Shane Salermo will be handling the writing duties for the ultra violent (and awesome) video game property.

Salerno’s current writing credits include the four sequels to Avatar for director James Cameron, which begin shooting in August, as well as writing and producing The Cartel for Ridley Scott to direct at Twentieth Century Fox, based on the bestselling Don Winslow novel. That film is tentatively eyeing a January production start.

His other credits include the Michael Bay-directed Armageddon and the Oliver Stone-directed Savages. I think his Avatar writing experience is a plus considering the amount of scale and effects work this movie will require. As long as there’s plenty of gun mounted chainsaw deaths I’m all in. This was one of my favorite games when it came out and I’ve always felt it could translate well to the big screen.

The film adaptation is being developed with Universal Pictures under the eye of veteran film producers Scott Stuber and Dylan Clark . A movie based on the popular third-person shooter franchise has been rumored for years, but Rod Fergusson, studio head of game developer The Coalition, said the film would not be based on any particular game but instead would be a new story set in the universe.

For those of you that are not familiar with the video game series: It focuses on the conflict between humanity, the subterranean reptilian hominids known as the Locust Horde, and their mutated counterparts, the Lambent & the Swarm. The franchise consists of five third-person shooter video games, which has also been supplemented by a comic book series and five novels.

I consider the video game a combination of Doom, Halo, and Resident Evil. The bulky look of the human soldiers actually remind me a lot of how X-Men’s CABLE looked like in the comics. I’m curious to see how the casting goes for this.

I do feel kind of bad for the HALO franchise since it hasn’t gotten a big budget chance yet. Hopefully this Gears Of War movie starts the conversations again over at Microsoft.
