Exclusive: Has HELLBOY Found A Home?
About two months ago Hellboy creator Mike Mignola took to Facebook and delighted fans with the news that Game of Thrones and The Descent director Neil Marshall is attached to helm Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen with Stranger Things actor David Harbour in the titular role.
According to Mignola this will be an R-rated film, which is fine by me, as long as the story is done right. Look despite the fact that del Toro made a fine job with regards to his understanding of Hellboy, the movies never appeared to have caught the quintessence of Mignola’s comics but that’s just my opinion.
The Script for Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen is written by Andrew Cosby, Christopher Golden and Hellboy creator Mike Mignola.
Back in 2004 Revolution Studios made the first film and was released by Columbia Pictures. The movie worldwide made $100 million, $60 mil domestically and $40 million internationally. The 2008 sequel Hellboy II: The Golden Army was made by Relativity Media and released by Universal Pictures and that films worldwide total was $160 million but was cut short six days later when it went head to head with The Dark Knight, directed by Christopher Nolan and featuring the late Heath Ledger as the Joker.
The question now is, who will distribute the 3rd Hellboy film since no distributor has been announced yet?
Well sources over the 4th of July weekend told me that Lionsgate is in advance negotiations to release the film.
Lionsgate could very well be a perfect landing spot for Hellboy. Marvel Studios, Warner Bros, Universal, and others are doing their best beating each other up in the box office making “family friendly” movies. It’s time for someone new to step up and give the fans that gritty comic book movie universe they’ve been missing. With all the rumored gore and action we can expect to see in a Hellboy movie, let us hope Lionsgate swings for the fences on this one.
