HIDDEN FIGURES Triumphs at Political SAG Awards

Awards season continued with the 23rd Screen Actors Guild Awards (SAG) last night, which featured even more political speeches than the Globes did earlier this month. At this rate, it is fair to wonder whether the Oscars next month will be a full blown political rally.

With that said, it was somewhat surprising, but perhaps pleasantly so, that Hidden Figures took home the SAG for Best Ensemble. Oscar favorite La La Land was not nominated. But, the musical took home a prize anyway, after Emma Stone won Best Actress. In the supporting categories, Viola Davis won her third SAG for her performance in Fences, and now appears the prohibitive favorite for the Oscar. Denzel Washington, meanwhile, shocked Casey Affleck by winning his first SAG ever for Fences. This will be the closest race at the Oscars probably. Mahershala Ali also took home an expected prize, for supporting actor for his performance in Moonlight, and he is also expected to repeat next month.

Netflix’s Stranger Things won Best Ensemble Drama, somewhat surprising The Crown, which had won two awards for its leads, Claire Foy and John Lithgow. The TV Comedy categories were more split up, with Orange is the New Black winning Best Ensemble again, though William H. Macy won his first SAG in this category for his role in Shameless, while Julia Louis-Dreyfus triumphed yet again for her work in Veep.

As expected, Sarah Paulson won for Best Actress in a TV Movie for playing O.J. Simpson prosecutor Marcia Clark in The People v. O.J. Simpson, while Bryan Cranston won the male category for playing President Johnson in All The Way.
