Jordan Peele Discusses Turning Down AKIRA
Splashingtons, in a post Get Out world, the big question on a lot of people’s minds is “what will Jordan Peele do next?” Well, one rumor going around was that he might direct the live-action remake of AKIRA. Peele touched on this briefly at a party Universal Pictures threw to promote the Blu-Ray release of Get Out. And, though big budget movies may be in his future, AKIRA doesn’t look like it will be one of them.
“I think [I could do it] if the story justifies it… AKIRA is one of my favorite movies, and I think obviously the story justifies as big a budget as you can possibly dream of. But the real question for me is: Do I want to do pre-existing material, or do I want to do original content? At the end of the day, I want to do original stuff.”
AKIRA is a classic, and if you haven’t seen it yet “shame on you.” Go now, run to the nearest place that will sell it. For those of you who thought of a website that streams it illegally, “shame on you.” I’d like to think that AKIRA could have a live-action remake that could live up to anime that is so beloved, but I’m also an optimist. In all honesty, it’s probably for the best to let that dead horse sit.
No need to keep beating it. And, Peele’s preference for original content is wildly going against the industry’s tend to rehash what they know worked before. Praise be to you Jordan Peele, and may you cause other filmmakers to start working on original content to.
Looking right at you Michael Bay.
