Leonardo DiCaprio as The Joker???
Splashigos, what DC is doing right now remains a mystery, and that is the most polite way I can put it. Whether it’s planning a Batgirl movie when The Batman is in a fog of uncertainty, thinking Harley Quinn and Gotham City Sirens was a good idea, talk of a Joker origin movie that’s not connected to the DCEU… it just seems like someone handed a monkey a gun.
One thing that jumped out when they announced the new Joker origin tale, was a producer’s name. You may know him as Martin Scorsese. In the circles I run in, we call him Martin Scorsese, but we tug at our suspenders when we do. He’s all class *beat* moving along!
Why would Scorsese, one of the most prolific directors in cinema, want to become involved with the DC as they are borderline torpedoing their film universe? Short of Wonder Woman’s recent achievements, there isn’t a lot to celebrate. Well, even his inclusion in the planned origin film is not set in stone yet, but now there comes this nugget from The Hollywood Reporter:
Sources say Warners will make an ambitious attempt to use Scorsese to bring Leonardo DiCaprio into the world of comic-book movies. Certainly, Scorsese’s involvement in The Joker film, which The Hangover filmmaker Todd Phillips would direct, could elevate and diversify the studio’s contributions to the genre, creating the potential to make awards-worthy films such as Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight trilogy.
There’s no offer for DiCaprio, and hopefully this stays a pipe dream. I love the Joker, who doesn’t? But, DiCaprio as a mob boss who gets turned into the Joker? No thank you. And, let’s all take a moment to think about how Jared Leto must feel about that. He just became Clown Prince of Crime and already you’re courting a new jester? As you can imagine, he was none too pleased about that:
Insiders say Jared Leto, the actor who portrayed the Clown Prince of Crime in last summer’s Suicide Squad and is slated to reprise the character not just for a sequel but for another spinoff movie (with DC villainess Harley Quinn), was caught off-guard by the plans. Leto is said to have made his displeasure with the notion of multiple Jokers known to his CAA agents, and rival agency WME has been using the concern to court him.
Oh DC/Warner Bros. what will you think of next? Does anyone else feel like they’re trying to have a mulligan on this whole shared universe thing? Just me? Okay.
Let me know what you think about DiCaprio as Mr. J. Sound off below!
