M. Night Shyamalan Is Back As SPLIT Tops The Box Office

comScore today announced the official worldwide weekend box office estimates for the weekend of January 22, 2017, and M. Night Shyamalan has delivered a second hit in a row as his latest film, Split, tops the box office.

Split earned an estimated $40.2 million, and is currently the fourth largest January opening of all-time, just ahead of 2008’s Cloverfield. The film did way better than Shyamalan’s 2015 thriller The Visit, which opened with $25.4 million and went on to make over $65 million. The film went on to make an estimated $5.8 million in the overseas markets.

Paramount’s xXx: The Return of Xander Cage, came in second and did an estimated $20 million. The film also brought in an estimated $50.5 million internationally and opened in for an estimated $70.5 million worldwide.

Meanwhile, Disney’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story has become the 28th film to top $1 billion worldwide.

“The global marketplace belongs to Vin Diesel this weekend with ‘xXx: The Return of Xander Cage’ taking in an impressive $50.5 million internationally and $70.5 million at the worldwide box office while M. Night Shyamalan’s suspense thriller ‘Split,’ the number one movie in North America, scared up an impressive $46 million in its debut.”
