Here Is Why Matthew McConaughey Chose THE DARK TOWER over GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Vol. 2
Oscar winner Matthew McConaughey has finally explained why he passed on the role of Star Lord’s dad in Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2 and we ain’t mad.
Yes, it would’ve been cool to see Chris Pratt and him banter about as father and son, but we can all agree that getting Kurt Russell to take that part was a win nonetheless.
So what was the main reason that Matthew passed on an MCU role? Blame it on The Dark Tower.
McConaughey spoke with Playboy about why the The Dark Tower was a more appealing choice than Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2:
“I like Guardians of the Galaxy, but what I saw was ‘It’s successful, and now we’ve got room to make a colorful part for another big-name actor.’ I’d feel like an amendment. The Dark Tower script was well written, I like the director [Nikolaj Arcel] and his take on it, and I can be the creator, the author of the Man in Black—a.k.a. the Devil—in my version of this Stephen King novel. We’ve done the first one. It’s a fantastic thriller that takes place in another realm, an alternate universe, but it’s very much grounded. For instance, the gunslinger’s weapon isn’t a lightsaber or something; it’s a pistol. I enjoyed approaching my character as if I were the Devil having a good time, getting turned on by exposing human hypocrisies wherever he finds them.”
This is such a “thespian” like response but I’d have to agree with him. Why just join a franchise when you can start your own.
There have even been reports that The Dark Tower series will not only have film sequels, but also spin off possibilities on TV or Netflix.
The Dark Tower, written by Stephen King, is about Jake Chambers (Tom Taylor) an 11-year-old adventure seeker who discovers clues about another dimension called Mid-World.
Upon following the mystery, he is spirited away to the land Mid-World where he encounters the lone frontiersman knight Roland Deschain (Idris Elba) who is on a quest to reach the “Dark Tower” that resides in End-World and reach the nexus point between time and space that he hopes will save Mid-World from extinction.
But with various monsters and a vicious sorcerer (Matthew McConaughey) hot on their trail, the unlikely duo find that their quest may be difficult to complete.
And just to be clear…there’s still a possibility for McConaughey to be a part of the MCU in the future so don’t rule that out just yet.
