Oscar Isaac on THE LAST JEDI; Confirms “Episode IX” Films Early Next Year
Esquire Magazine recently sat down for an interview with actor Oscar Isaac (“SUBURBICON”) to discuss his lavish career in film and stage. Isaac stars next month in Disney and Lucasfilm’s STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI, which is directed by Rian Johnson (“LOOPER”) and also stars Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Domhnall Gleason, Gwendoline Christie, Andy Serkis, Laura Dern, Benicio del Toro, Mark Hamill, and the late Carrie Fisher.
During the interview, Isaac was asked if his character, Poe Dameron, would make a suitable replacement for Harrison Ford’s Han Solo to John Boyega’s Finn and Daisy Ridley’s Rey saying;
“Well, there could be, but I think what [The Last Jedi director] Rian [Johnson] did was make it less about filling a slot and more about what the story needs. The fact is now that the Resistance has been whittled to just a handful of people, they’re running for their lives, and Leia is grooming me — him — to be a leader of the Resistance, as opposed to a dashing, rogue hero.”
Isaac told Esquire that his role has “not that much more, but a little more to do” in The Last Jedi. The actor also confirmed his involvement in the next installment, “STAR WARS: EPISODE IX”, which will be directed by J. J. Abrams (“STAR TREK”, “SUPER 8”); he starts filming the third Star Wars film in early 2018.
