Sony’s SMU Spin-Off SILVER AND BLACK Finds Director
Sony has found a director for their next SMU movie, Silver and Black.
Earlier this week, Sony announced that Tom Hardy would be donning the symbiote and giant tongue for Venom, and now we’ve learned that Gina Prince-Bythewood will be taking the helm of the upcoming Silver Sable/Black Cat film. The movie, appropriately titled Silver and Black, is slated for an October 2018 release.
Prince-Bythewood is probably best known for writing and directing Love & Basketball, as well as The Secret Life of Bees, and Beyond the Lights, among a number of other projects. Most recently, she took the helm on another Marvel property, directing the pilot episode of Cloak & Dagger for Freeform.
Silver and Black is being produced by Matt Tolmach and Amy Pascal, with a script by Lisa Joy (creator of Westworld) and Chris Yost (Thor: Ragnarok).
Both Silver Sable and Black Cat have been antagonists to varying degrees in the Spider-verse during their run in the comics. Silver Sable is a war-criminal-hunting mercenary, CEO of her own company, and leader of the Wild Pack. Black Cat, meanwhile, is a thief and occasional love interest of the web-slinger. Neither character has technically appeared on the big screen, though a version of Felicia Hardy (Black Cat’s secret identity) did appear in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, hinting at a possibility that Black Cat would appear in future installments of the canceled franchise.
No word yet on how this film will fit into the Tom Holland movie universe, if at all. It has been reported that Venom will not tie in at all, Sony choosing to keep their extended Spider-Man-related properties separate from those in the MCU.
