Thor: Ragnarok Director Taika Waititi in Talks to Direct AKIRA Project

Warner Bros.’ long-held wish to bring a new adaptation of the Japanese Manga comic Akira may be getting a shot in the arm as the studio engages in talks with Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi to helm the project.

Of course the concept has a long tortured history. Ruari Robinson was first supposed to take the helm, and then Steve Kloves (Harry Potter) was gonna write it. Then Jaume Collet-Sera (The Shallows) was going to direct Kristen Stewart and Garrett Hedlund.

All of them are no longer attached as Warner basically hit the reset button on the project while it develops a story more fully. It’s always been understood that they want to do two feature films out of six comics.

The reboot is supposed to center around the leader of a bike gang and take place in an apartment in New Manhattan. It is based on the post-apocalyptic series from Japan bearing the same name and was first adapted to the big screen in 1988.
