VENOM Teaser Drops, Does This Seal The Fate Of Comic Book Films?
Splashers, I’m afraid. I’m afraid that perhaps every person who told me “I think the comic movies are going to stop being so successful soon” was right. Now, naturally I met that statement with facts about how much Marvel films make, as well as the well plotted MCU strategy. Notice I didn’t mention DC; they would only sully the argument because most of them stink. But, lately there does seem to be a pretty steep drop in quality coming. Which takes us to Venom’s teaser trailer.
I hate to come across negative two days in a row, because that Deadpool 2 trailer yesterday was trash. But, today Sony released a teaser for Venom. That’s right, the anti-hero from Spider-Man’s neck of New York. But, as most are aware, Venom will not be facing off against Spidey. Nope, Spidey’s not in this film. I’m afraid this is just going to be an origin story, where we see little of Venom, and a whole lot of Eddie Brock. I’ve got nothing to support that statement, just a hunch. Oh, and I’ve seen the trailer. Go on, we’ll talk when you’re finished.
So, there you have it. First of all; who made the wise decision not to show us Venom? Would you have a Spider-Man trailer without showing the webhead? Is Venom like Chucky? Am I only going to see his foot running around a corner until the last 20 minutes of the film? Why the big reveal on the only reason I’m coming to the movie. Sorry, that was unfair. I also admire Tom Hardy’s work. Look at the mean shake he did in the teaser. Oh yeah, “Riz Ahmed, are you Carnage?” was what I asked out loud while watching. Please don’t be Carnage. I love Carnage, I love Riz, I don’t think the two can be friends.
Let’s just have a look at some comic book movies coming up that look (to me) like trash:
- Deadpool 2
- Aquaman (sorry DC’s streak of trash speaks for itself)
- X-Men: Dark Phoenix
- Silver and Black
- Gambit (hopefully Marvel cancels this)
- Flashpoint (if it actually happens, I think they’ve bitten off more than they can chew)
- Suicide Squad 2
- Gotham City Sirens
I felt mean, and left a few off. And, if you’re saying “well, there’s still a lot of good movies coming” the list of good was shorter. That impression could be left on the casual comic book movie fan. Maybe it won’t set in right away, but eventually they’ll start thinking “nah, those movies all suck now.” Someone behind a desk in a studio has to care. Someone needs to slap that person who decided not to show us Venom in this teaser. Someone needs to slap the person who decided 1:49 trailer can be called a teaser now. Let the slaphappy person speak for anyone who read comics as a kid, or now (nerds), and we shall celebrate. We’ll hoist them on shoulders and parade them through the streets. Sigh, I had more fun envisioning the slapper than I did watching that trailer.
What did you think?
