WONDER WOMAN Banned In Lebanon
Splashzanians, when you read the title what were the first things that raced through your mind? Personally, I thought Lebanon had issues with the Women Only Wonder Woman screenings that have been making headlines. Nope, sadly its not even that entertaining. Just good ol’ fashioned hate for the fact that the lead, Gal Gadot, is Israeli and former solider in the country’s army. Those poor Lebanese citizens will have to go above and beyond to experience the cinematic work critics are raving about.
The ban was prompted by Lebanese group Campaign to Boycott Supporters of Israel-Lebanon, aka nerds. Now some of you might say “but, she fought against them” and I see that point. But, as an American, if a Russian actor were in the same spot I’d like to make that decision for myself. Let’s pretend Rocky IV were real. Let’s even say that Drago was ex-KGB, and killed Rocky in the conclusion of that film. If Drago went on to become Cable in Deadpool 2, AMC doesn’t need to ban D2. I’m a big boy and can make that decision for myself… and I’d still see the movie.
Deadline reported that Wonder Woman was only set to play in 15 locations in Lebanon anyway. In the grand scheme of things it wouldn’t have affected the overall international box office gross for a movie of this scale. But, Lebanon has traditionally played Gadot’s titles in the country: Furious 7 earned $1.8M in the territory while Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice earned $843,000. Fast and Furious 6 took $788K while Fast Five took $520K. Guess someone just doesn’t like her being in the super spotlight. But, that’s just my opinion. Something doesn’t quite jive.
Lebanon is officially at war with Israel and has a law that boycotts Israeli products and bars Lebanese citizens from traveling or having contact with Israelis. The boycott group has indicated on its Facebook page that Gadot is a supporter of Israel’s military policies against the Palestinian region of the Gaza Strip. At the moment Warner Bros. has no comment. The executives may still be riding around on each other’s shoulders in their offices. Wonder Woman does still sit at a fancy 97% on Rotten Tomatoes. Party on Warner Bros., party on.
